organization Who are we? Brothers and Friends of Guatemala (HAGUA) is a solidary organization registered in the State of New York like a non-profit organization 501 (c) (3) and is recognized by the Department of Education. The group was born from the tragedy of the storm Stan. In their majority the members are Guatemalan who reside in the town of Port Chester, New York. The group begins when a journalist in a meeting speaks with the founder of the organization about the many problems through which the survivors of the storm were passing. Herberth Diaz and his wife mention the reverend of a church of the possibility of getting donations and this informs the church go-ers as well, with optimism and desire immediately they unite for a common cause. The group gets some aid and travels to Santiago Panabaj, Guatemala to give it. Today HAGUA continues helping Guatemalans inside and outside of the United States as wells as others that aren’t from Guatemala. In the month of April of 2008 the first branch of group HAGUA in the city of Stratford Connecticut is opened. With time HAGUA sees the importance of teaching and promoting the Guatemalan folklore and trains a dance group, HAGUA counts on 19 typical Guatemalan garments and 6 suits of that represent various animals (also known as Moros). They have appeared at tri-state level (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut), HAGUA in it’s second year of participation in the Hispanic Day Parade gains the second place in 2007. HAGUA’s objectives are: To help communities inside and outside of the United States in case of natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, storms or earthquakes. To provide information to the newly arrived people in the United States. We’ve organized workshops to help better understand the different topics like immigration, employment, and living.Give economic help to the families of our Guatemalan and non-Guatemalan brothers who have lost a loved on in the U.S. To create an educative organization to the service of the community that dictates the educational workshops like literacy for adults and urbanization. To promote the folklore and art of Guatemala |
